Sunderland Loanee Ekwah Aims to Elevate his Game and Goal-Scoring Prowess at Saint-Etienne
Pierre Ekwah, the out-on-loan Sunderland midfielder currently playing for Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne, has expressed his desire to score more goals and elevate his performance on the pitch. The 23-year-old French midfielder, who was previously part of the youth setups at Chelsea and West Ham, joined Sunderland in 2023 on a four-and-a-half-year deal.
During his time with the Black Cats, Ekwah made 61 appearances and contributed 5 goals and 2 assists. However, in the summer, Saint-Etienne secured a loan deal for the young midfielder, with an option to purchase him for €7 million.
Ekwah has already established himself as an important player for the French club, starting 19 Ligue 1 matches so far this season, with Saint-Etienne currently sitting in 16th place in the league table.
In an interview with Allez Les Lions (5:54), Ekwah expressed his ambitions for the remainder of the season, stating, “The goal for the end of the season is above all to keep the club going, to get out of this complicated situation.” He further added, “Personally, I want to raise my level of play, be better and do my team-mates and myself a favour and go get what I haven’t done or shown yet today.”
Ekwah revealed that he felt more clinical in front of goal during his time at Sunderland, as he played a more advanced and attacking role for the Championship side. He said, “At Sunderland, I scored a few goals, I was more decisive but I had a different role, I played a little higher, and I had other requests from the coach.”
The midfielder’s goal-scoring prowess was on display last weekend, as he found the back of the net in a 3-3 draw against Angers in a Ligue 1 clash. This was Ekwah’s first goal at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium.
Matches | Goals and Assists |

As Saint-Etienne continue to battle against relegation, it remains to be seen what decision Ekwah will make regarding his future destination at the end of the season. However, the young midfielder’s determination to improve his performance and goal-scoring abilities is evident, and he is committed to helping his current club overcome their challenging situation.
